What we will watch today quickly 2.2 Shortest scene in the play We're now back on the streets of Cyprus to hear Othello's herald make a public announcement: in celebration of the Turkish fleet's destruction, Othello has declared that tonight will be a party night in Cyprus. Every man can do what pleases him best.
What we will focus on Act 2 Scene 3 The drinking scene • Othello leaves Cassio in charge of Cyprus during the party and heads off to finally consummate his marriage to Desdemona • Iago works to get Cassio drunk so he will start a fight with some locals. • Oops, Cassio fights Roderigo but stabs Montano, Governor of Cyprus • Othello is called away from Desdemona to the fight scene
In your journals • How does Iago convince Cassio, who admits he is a lightweight, to drink. What role do the songs play in their revelry? • We see Othello’s anger in this scene (Now by heaven, my blood begins my safer guides to rule). What does Othello do to Cassio? Is Othello’s response to Cassio’s behavior fair? Explain • Cassio cries out for his lost reputation and Iago answers him. How does Iago respond? • What is Iago’s new plan at the end of this scene?
