Sample Research Incorporation • Topic Sentence: At the beginning of his hero’s journey, Santiago receives the call to adventure and crosses the threshold into an unknown world. • Support 1: Before receiving his call, Santiago had been leading a rather simple life as a shepherd. However, through recurring dreams, he is told that he must leave home and begin traveling. • Evidence 1: He is told where to go on his journey: “Travel to the Great Pyramids…a treasure awaits you there” (Coehlo 15). • Elaboration 1: These dreams and prophecies represent Santiago’s call to adventure. In fact, the treasure that he is told to seek is part of hero’s journey scholar Joseph Campbell’s definition of a “call to adventure.” In his description of the call, Campbell states that “the objective of the adventure is often generically referred to as ‘the treasure’” (“Campbell’s Hero’s Journey Monomyth”).
