How it all began: • 1996: OECD Project: “Transition from initial education to working life“ • 1997: progressing difficulties at the gateway school – world of work. Start of project: „Chances for young people“ • 1999: Start of „Career Catching Agent „ (after a province – wide survey about success criteria and obstacles for transition) in 4 districts from 17 districts in Styria • Development of the project up to 14 districts in the last 9 years. • 2009: 10th year of duration
Characteristics after 8th year • Ninth school year (ninth grade) polytechnical school – prevocational year • 1 – 3 year “middle” school • 4 years general education school (gymnasium – upper secondary) • 5 year vocational education school (full time) • 3 to 4 years apprenticeship (vocational education training) • Postsecundary, tertiary, University, appl. Sc. • Further professional education and training

Careers advice in schools has, since 1998, been an integral part of the services provided by schools. • On seventh and eighth grades curriculum includes a subject “Vocational Orientation”. • On ninth grade pupils can choose to attend a different school type – a polytechnic school - which combines basic general education, vocational orientation and on-the-job training in order to allow pupils to get in contact with companies which offer apprenticeships.
School counsellors • Individual guidance and counselling provided by school counsellors. • In all schools throughout both levels of secondary school education (Secondary I and II) from the ages of ten to nineteen. • School counsellors provide general and careers advice, as well as guidance and are usually teachers with qualifications in ‘guidance and counselling’, although additional part-time counsellors are also supporting.
School psychologists • This service is provided for specific issues concerning personal development, special needs and diagnostics. The three main aims are prevention, intervention and rehabilitation. • It also incorporates advice on further education and career options. • In recent years the provision of services of school psychologists has been further developed by the creation of nationally uniform standards for school psychological services.
Since 1998/99 vocational guidance has been a compulsory exercise in the 7rd and 8th grade of general secondary school and academic secondary school with a total of 32 lessons a year. • There are usually 1 teacher at a school teaching “Vocational Orientation” for 7th and 8th grade. • Usually there is one career counsellor at a school for all pupils, sometimes it is the same person as the teacher for VO • In Austria there are about 90 school psychologists.
Question: Why do you need career catching counsellors when you have a 3 tier system? • Answer: Career catching counsellors work in addition to school counsellors, they are the link to the world of work; they develop projects and support schools in implementing these. CCC‘s are the answer to the demand of apprenticeship trainers to get better oriented young people.

Companies and parents are supported by: • Info-evenings for parents “How ca I support my child in finding the fitting profession and fitting apprenticeship?” • Information about new apprentices • Interactive activities: • At the moment there are 19 standardised interactive activities between schools and companies e.g. • Job testing • My job – my future • Start your future • Coming together • etc.

New project since October 2008: • „Qualicoach for basic skills“ • Aim: young people, 14 – 16 years old, still at school but showing shortcomings in social and personal skills.
