The 0 Conditional • Form: If + Present tense ... V in Present tense • Use: • Facts: If you cut your finger, you bleed • General Truths: If you boil water, it turns to steam • Habits: If I order tea, I ask for sugar. It expresses real situations
What do you know about Superstitions in Britain? • HANDOUT ONE • TASK ONE. In pairs, decide whether the following statements bring GOOD or BAD luck in Britain. What do you know about Superstitions in Britain? • HANDOUT ONE • TASK TWO. In pairs, put the beginnings and the ends together, using the expressions from the box. • TASK THREE. In groups of four, discuss the following questions with your classmates. 1. Which British superstitions are similar to those in your country? Which are different? 2. Can you give a definition of ‘superstition’? 3. Do you believe that they can influence our lives?

The First Conditional • Form: If + Present tense ... Will (‘ll) + v. infinitive • Use: It expresses a situation that it is certain or likely to happen in the future • EXAMPLES: • If you run, you will catch the bus • You will be late at school if you don’t get up now • If Michael goes to the gym, he will get fit • I won’t buy an IPhone if it’s too expensive

The Second Conditional • Form: If + v. Past Simple... Would (‘d) + v. infinitive • Use: It expresses unreal, untrue, impossible or unlikely situations in the present • EXAMPLES: • If I had more time, I would travel / I would travel if I had more time*1 • If I/he were famous, I/he would meet my/his favourite music band*2 • If I were you, I wouldn’t cut my hair. It looks good the way it is. *3 • If David had a better sense of humour, he would have more luck with his love relationships *1 Note: Use a comma when the ‘if’ clause comes first. *2 Note: When you use a form of ‘be’ to state a condition, you must use ‘were’ for all persons. *3 Note: We often give advice using ‘If I were you...’
