The Armenian Genocide 1915 As the Ottoman Empire falls apart during World War I, residents of Armenia or ethnic Armenians were systematically arrested, deported from their homelands and killed because of their ethnicity. *The term genocide was not coined until 1943. The Armenian is the first genocide of the last century and unfortunately, not the last. *The Armenian atrocities are the 2nd most studied genocide in history. *Turkey still does not acknowledge the genocide. *1-1.5 million people were rounded up, taken to the Syrian Desert or location/detention centers, and killed.

Germany loses WWI and forms Weimar Republic • Nazi party forms 1920 • 1923 Beer Hall Putsch. Fails and leaders arrested • Hitler writes Mein Kampf(my Struggle) in prison about the T of V, anti-Semitism, anti-internationalism

  8. Night of the Long Knives 1934 Night of the Long Knives—Operation Hummingbird Further consolidation of power, elimination of rivals Herman Goring and Heinrich Himmler, Ernest Rohm and the SA do not. The SS (Hitler’s personal guard) murders those opposing Hitler within the NAZI party.

  10. 5 Hideki Tojo 1889-1948 • Japanese Education minister-emphasized military and totalitarian policies in government • Lead the military invasion of Manchuria • Military General and Prime Minister of Japan during WWII • Ordered the attack on Pearl Harbor • After war he was arrested and put to death for war crimes

  11. 6. Pablo Picasso and the Lost generation • After WWI, artists had a grim and different outlook on life since an entire generation of young men were killed. • Ernest Hemingway • F Scott Fitzgerald • Pablo Picasso • Gertrude Stein named them the “Lost” generation.
