  1. Electricity and Waves!!! Can you handle it?

  2. Magnetism VS Electricity Electricity and Magnetism are closely related because of their similarities! Voltman

  3. Electricity • Electricity- interaction of electric charges. • Electric Charge- physical property of protons and electrons • What creates an electrical charge? • More electrons-negative • More protons-positive • P=E then no charge

  4. Electricity • Law of electric charges- like charges repel and unlike charges attract • Electric Force- the attractive or repelling force between charged objects. • Like charges repel + + - - • Unlike particles attract + -

  5. Static Electricity • Static Electricity- build-up of electric charges on an object. • Static means “not moving” • Ex. Balloon on hair • Electric Discharge- sudden brief flow of electrons • Ex. Lightening or touching metal after you have a charge.

  6. Current Electricity • Current Electricity- the continuous flow of electrical charge • Conductors- materials that are good at carrying an electrical charge • Ex. Copper, water • Insulator-material NOT good at carrying a charge • Ex. Rubber, wood, air, glass • Currents are measured in Amps.

  7. Current Electricity • Direct Current- when electric charges move in one direction • Ex. Battery • Alternating Current-when electric charges flow in one direction then reverse direction. • Ex. Local power company

  8. Electric Circuits • Circuit- electric current that flows through a path • A circuit is a big loop. • Closed circuit- has NO breaks • Open circuit- has a break

  9. Waves • Wave-an oscillation (up and down or back and forth) that travels from one place to another with a certain velocity. (Speed and Direction)

  10. Waves • Mechanical Waves-Waves that travel through matter. • Ex. Sound Waves or Water Waves • Electromagnetic Waves-waves that can travel through empty space AND matter • Ex. X-rays, radio waves, microwaves, light

  11. Characteristics of Waves • Amplitude-the distance a waves oscillates • Wavelength- distance from any point on one wave to the same point on another wave. • Frequency- the number of oscillations produced in a certain amount of time. • Wave speed- distance a wave travels in a given amount of time

  12. Kinds of Waves • Transverse Waves-when the oscillation of a wave is perpendicular to the direction it is going to travel • Crest- Highest point • Trough- lowest point

  13. Kinds of Waves • Longitudinal Waves- a wave whose oscillation is parallel to the direction • Ex. Seismic waves • Compressions- where waves are close together • Rarefractions-where waves are farther apart

  14. Separate Waves and Electricity
