Medication Administration Training for Unlicensed School Personnel • Released mid-April, 2019 • Replaces previous version of training program • New training program is NOT available on KY TRAIN • Districts can use PowerPoint to develop online training within their districts

Diabetes Update Per KRS 158.838 • Any training program of guidelines for training of school personnel in the diabetes care tasks shall be consistent with programs and guidelines developed by the American Diabetes Association • Local school district(s) shall by permitted to use any adequate and appropriate training program of guidelines for training school personnel in diabetes care

Frequently Asked Questions • CBD Oil - It is not FDA approved nor regulated • Essential Oils – It is also not FDA approved or regulated. Also the scent could possibly trigger severe allergic reaction in student with severe allergies
What about…? • Sunscreen – should be considered an over the counter medication. Can be applied with parent note, parent should supply the sunscreen as the child could possibly be allergic to specific brands of sunscreen

Summary of Guidance Document • Parents of a student with epilepsy are required to collaborate with school personnel to develop a seizure plan • Each school is required to have at least one staff member present that can administer seizure medications as well as signs and symptoms of seizures and the appropriate steps to respond • If none is available, the school must ensure that this health service is provided • Students are also protected by Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act
Parent Responsibilities • Must provide written authorization to administer the medication • Provide written orders by a physician with guidelines for treatment • Provide medication with pharmacy label attached • Are involved in the development in the student’s seizure plan • The parent or guardian of the student shall sign a written statement acknowledging that the school or its employee shall incur no liability
Revising district Health Care Plans/Forms • Districts should consider modifying their seizure health care plans and doctors order forms to include the requirements of KAR 158.838 • District policies and procedures should also be revised to include the requirements of KAR 158.838
