Treatment Program Components Treatment must include: • Members of the family • Other close persons • Culturally tribal traditions and practices (including spirituality) • An understanding of the patient’s role as a member of a community • Contextual Considerations • Location of the treatment facility • Therapeutic context of the services • Interagency cooperation Examples • Language classes • Sweat lodges • History lessons • Drumming • Singing lessons Form a Collaborative Relationship With: • Community leaders • Tribal leaders • Spiritual Leaders
Treatment Issues • Traumatic impact of historical events • Physical and psychological disorders co-occuring with substance abuse • Cultural sensitivity and cultural competency in diagnosis assessment and treatment • Knowledge of the client’s cultural context, including history and world view • Awareness of the care provider’s assumptions, values and biases pertaining to natives • Appropriate intervention strategies and skills
