OGLE - History of the Program Bohdan Paczynski - Princeton University Andrzej Udalski - Warsaw University Observatory OGLE I - Started in 1992, lasted for 4 years using the existing 1.0 m Swope telescope at Las Campanas, Chile - Science: observed the first microlensing event in 1993 ! first measurement of the optical depth of microlensing events toward the Bulge evidence of a stellar bar in the Bulge - Operations funded by State Committee of Scientific Research to astronomers at Warsaw U. - Limited telescope time! (telescope belongs to Carnegie Institution of Washington) Diaspora in Cercetarea Stiintifica - Bucuresti, 21-24 Sept. 2010
OGLE - History of the Program OGLE II • Project for a new telescope started in 1991; contract signed with DFM Engineering Inc. (Longmont, Colorado) in 1992 for the manufacturing of a new 1m-class telescope; site selection in Las Campanas, Chile (agreement signed between Carnegie Institution and Warsaw University). • Construction started in1995, with the telescope enclosure manufactured in Poland • First light in 1996; routine observations in 1997 • Single chip CCD detector. Diaspora in Cercetarea Stiintifica - Bucuresti, 21-24 Sept. 2010
OGLE - History of the Program • First light: july 1996 • remote control (from control room and over internet) • fully automated • -main purpose: imaging 1.3 m Warsaw University telescope at Las Campanas, Chile: dome and control building Diaspora in Cercetarea Stiintifica - Bucuresti, 21-24 Sept. 2010
OGLE - History of the Program OGLE III - Started in 2001 with a new 8-chip mosaic CCD camera with a field of view of 35x35 arcmin, and a scale of 0.26 “/pix; readout time 98 sec. OGLE IV - Started in March 2010; new 32-chip mosaic camera with a field of view of 1.4 sq. degrees Diaspora in Cercetarea Stiintifica - Bucuresti, 21-24 Sept. 2010

OGLE - Scientific Results • Microlensing events toward the LMC and SMC can not account for dark matter consisting of MACHOs (compact, sub-solar objects) (Wyrzykowski et al. 2009, 2010) • Variable stars: detection of Cepheids (classical and type II), RR Lyrae, Scuti, eclipsing binaries) • Stellar populations: V, I photometry for color-magnitude diagrams, evidence of a stellar bar in the bulge region • Astrometry: relative proper motions in the Galactic bulge (5 mill. objects); and high proper motion objects toward the Magellanic Clouds • - Other: Kuiper belt objects, extrasolar planets 259 papers as of September 2010 Diaspora in Cercetarea Stiintifica - Bucuresti, 21-24 Sept. 2010
The All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) PROJECT - initiated by B. Paczynski (Princeton University) and G. Pojmanski (Warsaw University Observatory) - funded by KBN (Polish funding agency) and a gift by W. Golden to B. Paczynski GOAL - find and catalog variable stars with V < 14 mag. - a low cost project dedicated to constant photometric monitoring of the entire (available) sky Diaspora in Cercetarea Stiintifica - Bucuresti, 21-24 Sept. 2010
The All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) • EQUIPMENT • Two sites: 1) Las Campanas Obs., Chile (since 1997), • 2) Haleakala, Maui, Hawaii (since 2006) • Each site has two main wide field telescopes observing simultaneously in V and I • It is a fully automated system Diaspora in Cercetarea Stiintifica - Bucuresti, 21-24 Sept. 2010
