What’s an “atom”? Everything is made up of atom Atom = “indivisible” or “uncuttable” This indivisible part is called an atom.
Atomic Theory 1. Every element is made of atoms ex: Hydrogen, Oxygen, Carbon, Nitrogen 2. All atoms of any element are the same 3. Atoms of different elements are different 4. Atoms of different elements can combine to form compounds 5. In chemical reactions, atoms are not made, destroyed, or changed
What’s inside an atom? Subatomic particles: Electron (-) Proton (+) Neutron (0)
Molecule Molecule: two or more atoms combine together Ex: water (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2)
Macromolecule • Macromolecules are • “BIG” molecules • Building blocks of life!
Organic vs. Inorganic Organic Compounds: must contains both elements Carbon (C) and Hydrogen (H). ex: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids Inorganic Compounds: don’t contains both elements Carbon (C) and Hydrogen (H). ex: salts, minerals, water, carbon dioxide
Chemistry of Carbon The Carbon Cycle http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/ocr_gateway/understanding_environment/recyclingact.shtml
Macromolecules are found in food! Pringles Sour cream & onion Pringles Salt & Vinegar
Life Macromolecule 1: CarbohydratesBuilding block: sugars • Carbohydrate (sugar) = Carbon + Hydrogen + Oxygen • Living things use carbohydrate as their main source of energy (ex: sugar) ex: starch, cellulose, glucose
Life Macromolecule 2: LipidsBuilding blocks: fatty acids + glycerol Lipids (fats) = Fatty Acids + Glycerol Fatty Acid=Carbon + A Lot of Hydrogen Glycerol=Carbon + Hydrogen + Oxygen
Life Macromolecule 3: ProteinsBuilding blocks: amino acids (20 kinds) Proteins = Amino Acids + Amino Acids + … Amino Acids= Carbon + Nitrogen + Hydrogen + Oxygen ENZYME is a class of protein (we will come back to this) ex. Insulin In our body: muscle, ligaments, skin and hair
Life Macromolecule 4: Nucleic AcidsBuilding blocks: nucleotides Nucleotide = Carbon + Hydrogen + Oxygen + Nitrogen + Phosphorus Nucleic Acid = nucleotide + nucleotide +… Two types: DNA and RNA
