Memory Verse: Psalm 37:5 “Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.” BIBLE PASSAGE:Psalm 37:23-37 INTRODUCTION: A Christian is one who has renounced his own will and submits to the will of God for his life in all that he does. The life of Jesus Christ on earth is a perfect illustration of absolute conformity to the will of God (Hebrews 10:7). As Jesus was assigned a special task to perform on earth, each Christian is similarly assigned to a special task. The problem that faces every Christian then is how to ascertain the will of God for his life. It is our prayer that this lesson will throw more light on this very crucial task of knowing God’s will. KNOWING THE LORD’S WILL
Outlines: IS THERE A PLAN FOR MY LIFE WHAT IS THE PLAN LIKE? HAVE ALL THE PLANS CERTAIN THINGS IN COMMON? WHAT MUST I DO TO BE GUIDED BY GOD? WHAT METHODS DOES GOD USE IN REVEALING HIS WILL? KNOWING THE LORD’S WILL
KNOWING THE LORD’S WILL • Outline 1: • IS THERE A PLAN FOR MY LIFE? • Yes there is a plan for your life. There is a divine plan for each one of God’s people. This plan takes into consideration your personality, talents, needs, potentialities and environment (Ephesians 2:10). God has ordained certain specific tasks, works or race for each individual Christian (Hebrews 12:1). Paul could say “…I have finished my course…” only when he had fulfilled his ministry and his work was completed (2 Timothy 4:7)
Outline 2: • WHAT IS THE PLAN LIKE? • God’s plan for you is very personal. It is just for you. The plan is very detailed with everything worked out step by step (Psalm 37:23). God may not reveal the distant future but His guidance will be continuous (Isaiah 58:11). He is ready to reveal the next step to you but, as usual, you need to ask before you can receive (Psalm 143:8). One thing you can be sure of us is that God’s will for you is always good and perfect (Romans 12:2). You must also realize that you are incapable of planning your own life (Jeremiah 10:23). God knows the future and He is the One capable of choosing our vocation, life partner and path. KNOWING THE LORD’S WILL
KNOWING THE LORD’S WILL • Outline 3: • HAVE ALL THE PLANS CERTAIN THINGS IN COMMON? • Yes, God’s plans always include certain features. For example, separation from sin into holiness is always in any divine plan (1 Thessalonians 4:3). Prayer and thanksgiving are always God’s will for us (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18). Everyone is also expected to do good deeds (1 Peter 2:15). These three things are basic to every individual plan of God.
Outline 4: • WHAT MUST I DO TO BE GUIDED BY GOD? • If you are a saved soul and you wish to know God’s plan for your life, there are certain things you must do. • Trust in the Lord (Psalm 37:3, Psalm 32:8). You can only be guided by someone you trust • Commit everything to Him only. Do not choose first and then ask Him to ratify (Psalm 37:5). • Rest in Him and be patient. God is a King, the King of kings, therefore, honour Him and not hasten Him (Psalm 37:7). He promises to guide but not necessarily to reveal His will the same day that you request for it • Surrender to the will of God (Romans 12:1-2). When He finally reveals His will to you, abide by it. Outline 5: • WHAT METHODS DOES GOD USE IN REVEALING HIS WILL? • God is sovereign and does not work according to a set of pattern for He deals with each person differently. However, God often guides through portions of scriptures that keep flashing into your mind (Psalm 119:105). Do not close your eyes and point random. God does not act haphazardly. Saturate yourself with the word of God so that the Lord can bring various portions to your mind as the need arises. God’s will is never contrary to the Bible, therefore know the word of God. KNOWING THE LORD’S WILL
Outline 5: • WHAT METHODS DOES GOD USE IN REVEALING HIS WILL? • Another method commonly used by God is inner conviction that is given by the Spirit of God (Romans 8:16). Always ask “Is this the voice of my own desires or is it what God wants me to do?” (John 16:13). Any obstacle could be a stoplight so that we can wait for Him. KNOWING THE LORD’S WILL
KNOWING THE LORD’S WILL • CONCLUSION • There are other ways that God may use in revealing His will but the above two are the surest. In all cases, surrender your own will and be absolutely neutral if you are to know His will. Pray for guidance, study the word and wait on God. You only need light for one step at a time. Obey that light and then He will give you further light.
