  1. Generalities J . Kerby

  2. Generalities - Codes • CERN/LHC – US/LHC MOU on Accelerator Mechanical Safety (TIS-TE-MB-98-74) • Structural safety • Engineering Safety File • ASME Pressure Vessel Code / CERN Safety Code D2 Rev 2 • Equipment beyond pure pressure vessels subject to additional engineering evaluation as agreed upon consistent w/ good engineering practice 24-25 Inner Triplet Review - J Kerby

  3. Generalities - Codes • Cold mass / magnet skin welds • D1 accepted as continuation of RHIC series (TIS-TE-MB-lj-2000-06) • MQXA welds qualified through KEK/Toshiba / CERN/TIS • MQXB Welds qualified through FNAL / CERN/TIS 24-25 Inner Triplet Review - J Kerby

  4. Generalities - Codes • All piping, attachments, & vacuum vessels fall under this agreement • Bellows follow EJMA Guidelines • Separate Piping ASME B31.3 • Structural Supports; Support Posts left to engineering practice and designer 24-25 Inner Triplet Review - J Kerby

  5. Generalities – Load Cases • Line pressures / MAWP derived from LHC Project Note 135 (1998) • 300K, 2K, design and test pressures • For all lines simultaneously pressurized, load on Q1 15 tonnes toward IP; Q3 12 tonnes away from IP • Fast transient pressures small; Inner Triplet quenches typically < 8 bar 24-25 Inner Triplet Review - J Kerby

  6. Generalities – Load Cases • Vacuum Loads • Q1 closure back to DFBX; D1 side to DFBX • Gravity • Maximum tunnel slope of <2% longitudinal • Shipping • Including restraints and frame, spec’d to <2g any direction • Successful EXCEPT when contract violated and trains utilized by company 24-25 Inner Triplet Review - J Kerby

  7. Generalities – Boundary Conditions • Supports also have boundary conditions on • Static Heat Load • Transverse Stability 24-25 Inner Triplet Review - J Kerby

  8. Generalities – Materials • Pipes, vacuum vessels as specified in engineering notes • Q1/Q2/Q3 typ 304/304L, 316LN, Vacuum Vessel L485MB • DFBX typ 304/304L/Invar • D1 - RHIC assembly • Supports, Spiders fiberglass / resin composite 24-25 Inner Triplet Review - J Kerby

  9. Generalities – Safety Coefficients • ASME codes for ductile materials typically 3 – 3.5 to ultimate or 1.5 to yield strength (in 1998 Div I was 4 to ultimate) • Welds further derated depending on geometry and inspection • Spider support transverse SF 2 to ultimate • Other BCs included in optimization 24-25 Inner Triplet Review - J Kerby
