Contextual Clues Are words , phares or sentences within the article that can help readers to deduce meaning without referring to the dictionary. The clue may appear within the same sentence or it may follow in the next sentence.
Definitions • The meaning is given in the sentence and the words below will be the signal for the definitions of the word. • Signaled bywords or phrases such as, that is, or, meaning, known as, is called, in other words , refers , is defined Example : In this race, you have to sprint, that is, run as fast as you can.
Restatement • Words that restate the meaning of the particular words. • often introduced by commas or dashes and by words and phrases such as or, that is, or in other words. • Examples : The village was depopulated , most of the residents dead or moved but the livestock remained untouched.
Examples • To illustrate the word. • Examples : Zack was good at many sports. He excelled in swimming, running, horsemanship, fencing, and target shooting.
Synonyms • Words of the same meaning are given in the articles. • Examples : After seeing the picture of the starving children, we felt compassionor pity for their suffering.
Antonynms • Words of the opposite meaning are given and usually introduced by the words below. • - but , however , yet , nevertheless , while • Example: Bill and Kenny is twin , but both of them have a contrast character.
Explanation / Descriptions • Words that describe the meaning of the words. • Examples : The shy girl insecure and unsure , slowly approached the interviewer.
General Context • Information around the words that provide on the meaning. • Examples : In a desert , vegetarian is so scanty as to be incapable of supporting any large human population.
