  1. Selection and Inbreeding Method Effects on Upland Cotton Yield and Fiber Properties Beltwide Cotton Conferences New Orleans, LA January 12, 2007 D. B. Weaver, R. S Badger, and E. van Santen

  2. Objectives • Determine effect of inbreeding method [pedigree (PED) vs. bulk (single-seed descent, SSD)] on mean yield and fiber quality of six cotton populations, and • Determine genetic correlations among traits

  3. Materials and Methods • Six populations were studied • Parents were adapted cultivars or elite breeding lines, non GMO, typical parents in a cotton improvement program • F2:3 lines grown in the field in 2003 (PED), along with F3 bulks (SSD) • F3:4 lines (PED) and F3:4 (SSD) grown in field in 2004

  4. Parents and Populations

  5. Materials and Methods • All generations advanced by self-pollination where possible. • F2:3 lines were sampled by collecting a 5-boll sample from each of 3 representative plants. • F3 single plants were evaluated for three traits, and a selection index was applied:

  6. Traits evaluated • Lint weight per seed (LWS, component of yield) • Short fiber content (SFC, determined by AFIS) • Upper quartile length (UQL, determined by AFIS) • Variables were standardized (subtract mean and divide by standard deviation) and summed (SFC treated as a negative value) • Best lines, as determined by selection index, tested as PED lines in 2005

  7. Materials and Methods • F3:5 lines, inbred by both methods, were grown in the field during 2005 • Plots were 4 rows, 6.1 m long, on 1 m row spacing • RCB design, 3 reps, genotypes nested within inbreeding method • Method fixed; genotypes, blocks random

  8. Lines per population

  9. Genetic Correlations calculated as ρ = covxy÷√σ2x σ2y Where x and y are two different traits

  10. Lint yield Lint percentage Lint weight per seed Boll weight HVI fiber properties: Micronaire Fiber length T1 (strength) E1 (elasticity) Uniformity index Short fiber content Traits evaluated

  11. Results: Lint Yield (lbs/A)

  12. Results: Lint wt/seed (g × 102) * Indicates significance at the 0.05 level.

  13. Results: 50% SL (inches)

  14. Results: Short Fiber Content (%)

  15. Results: Micronaire * Indicates significance at the 0.05 level.

  16. Genetic Correlation of Fiber Strength with… _is the median correlation among five populations

  17. Genetic Correlation of Micronaire with… _is the median correlation among five populations

  18. Genetic Correlation of Fiber Length with… _is the median correlation among five populations

  19. Genetic Correlation of Lint Yield with… _is the median correlation among five populations

  20. Conclusions • For most traits and populations, inbreeding method had little effect • Genetic correlations vary greatly by populations; some “traditional” negative correlations still exist to a large degree • Fiber strength tends to correlate negatively with yield components • Fiber length tends to correlate negatively with yield components • Micronaire tends to correlate positively with yield components
