BIM Deployment Plan: • Use Available Resources • AGC’s Contractors Guide • Autodesk BIM Implementation document • Building Technology Group/Charlotte www.buildingtechgroup.com • Revit Users Group http://www.revitusergroup.com/
BIM: Why its worth the Challenge and Change • Owners • Architects • BIM • Builders & • Fabricators • Civil • Engineers • MEP Systems • Engineers • Structural • Engineers
Owner Mandates: Carolinas HealthCare System Texas Facilities Commission
Benefits to Owners • Facility Management • Project Documentation and Development • As- Built Record documentation • Asset Management • Better documentation for future renovation projects • Produces better end product for their customers “We own and operate our buildings for 50 years or more—and approximately 90 percent of the costs occur after construction. We need to make smarter decisions with those assets—and to have access to real-time information about them. BIM is how we access and maintain that information.” —Peter Strazdas Associate Vice President, Facilities Management Western Michigan University
Construction wrapping up at new plant in Charleston, SC General Contractors and Subs utilizing BIM specifically Autodesk’s Navisworks Manage, Revit and Trimble LM80 “ We had substantial cost and time savings because of our coordination, BIM workflow. It’s always hard to quantify what didn’t happen but, I know we had a large percentage reduction in coordination related change orders and have met all of our fast-track schedule goals” Erick Hutson – Turner Construction BIM project coordinator
Layout Solution: Enables contractors to utilize the BIM model for single person construction layout and as-built collection to update model. Prism Pole with Data Collector and Radio Trimble Data Collector with LM80 Trimble Robotic Total Station

Undergraduate curriculum:1. Undergraduate CEM students are required to take a Graphics Elective. The majority now select TDE 220, a course in AutoCAD (as do the CE majors). 2. In our Construction Planning, Scheduling and Estimating course (CE 463), we use a. Primavera (P6) as part of our scheduling content, and b. On-Screen Take-off and Timberline as part of our estimating content (the Timberline coverage is not nearly as extensive as P6 coverage). P6 is required in the Senior Capstone course (CE 469) in CEM. We are not nearly as happy with P6 as we were many years ago with P3, but still feel compelled to teach it as the industry standard. 3. In our Construction Equipment course (CE 465), we review GPS control and various Trimble products for quantity take-off, site design, and site layout software, especially Site Vision. This is largely introductory in nature, however. We do not teach the hands-on parts, leaving that for practice (as-needed). We offer only a very brief introduction to BIM (in CE 469) at the undergraduate level. This introduction is primarily a terminology and concept lecture with comments on perspectives and expectations of the various stakeholders in the process so as to understand the driving forces behind implementation and acceptance. We emphasize the opportunity to catch design errors and integration problems by a variety of designers during initial planning rather than during construction (with the significant cost reductions that occur as a result), and the relative costs and benefits to the various stakeholders, to hopefully provide better insight into who's a fan and who is merely a (forced) participant.
