Great Lake Name Origins • Lake Superior- largest in North America, named by the Ojibwe indigenous people of Canada, originally called gichi-gami, meaning “Great Sea,” and renamed by French explorers during the 17th Century • Lake Michigan- also Ojibwe name michi-gami, meaning “Great Water” • Lake Huron- named after the Huron indigenous people by French explorers • Lake Erie- named after the Native American Erie people • Lake Ontario- named after the Huron word Ontari’io, meaning “Great Lake”
