  1. BIS…Inside Out Kevin Christopher-George Carrier Sales Manager (RIM)

  2. The BlackBerry Internet Service • The BIS is a unique service from RIM that allows BlackBerry customers (with a data plan) to get optimized push email (up to 10 accounts) and web browsing on their BlackBerry smartphones

  3. What is Push Email? • BIS provides push email services for always-on email • Pull email vs. Push email: Pull email is like having a PO box - action is required to retrieve your mail Push email is more like a delivery service - your mail comes right to you

  4. What Does BIS Look Like?

  5. What is the Value of BIS? • The RIM solution is the ONLY mobile solution that has been created from the ground up to support mobile devices (hardware, operating system and network) • Facts: • PDA’s have small batteries • The more data a PDA has to manage on its own DIRECTLY affects both battery performance and device stability • Cellular networks are inherently slower than office and/or high speed networks • Cellular networks are a PUBLIC network used to access all types of data from a range of different sources • File attachments pose potential threats in terms of malicious software (i.e. viruses, trojans etc.)

  6. What do Other Solutions Look Like? Work is done here

  7. How Does BIS Fit In? • BlackBerry uses its own network (the RIM network) • It is a private network created specifically for the optimized transmission of data to and from mobile devices (BlackBerry’s) • Data is secure and compressed (sometimes up to 70%) • The work is done on the network, not on the device • When you “create a BIS account”, all you are doing is telling the RIM network to send emails from a particular email account to a particular BlackBerry’s (PIN) Work is done here

  8. Setting Up BIS on the BlackBerry. Option 1 • On the BlackBerry, select the Email Settings or Setup Wizard icon • Set up BIS on the device in 4 easy steps: 1. Create account 2. Accept terms 3. User ID & PW 4. Set up email

  9. Setting Up BIS on the Internet. Option 2 • Go to www.uscellular.blackberry.com • Set up BIS online in 5 simple steps: • Create new account • Accept legal terms • Enter device PIN & ESN/IMEI • Create username & password • Integrate or create email acct • Let’s take a look at how easy this is… BIS simulation website

  10. Once complete… • A new email icon for each account will appear on the BlackBerry • The customer will be able to login to their BIS account to modify filters and settings using the Email Settings icon, or logging back into http://uscellular.blackberry.com

  11. BIS Facts • Supports up to 10 email accounts • Supports POP3 and IMAP email accounts • Security on BIS is equivalent to online banking security (128-bit SSL encryption) • Allows for attachment viewing on BlackBerry smartphones (MS Office documents, PDF’s, image, audio, video files etc.) • Compresses data for optimized browsing speeds and email delivery • Work is done on network, not on the device • Can work in conjunction with (or on top of) BES • Does not (currently) synchronize calendar and contacts (these must be done using desktop manager with the BlackBerry connected to the PC/Laptop) • Mail filters can be setup with BIS • Does not require a server

  12. BIS vs. BES What is the difference between the two solutions?
