  1. The Metric System

  2. Basic Units • Length is measured with the meter • Mass is measured with the gram • Volume of liquids are measured with the liter 1 meter is about 3 inches longer than a yard 1 gram is about the mass of 1 large paper clip X 50 = A triple beam scale is used to measure mass A graduated cylinder is used to measure liquids

  3. Base Units are changed by adding a prefix- it changes the value by a factor of 10 (or multiples of 10)

  4. Use a memory aid to help you remember the order of the prefixes! • Choose one of the mnemonic sentences below or make up 1 of your own. • King Henry Doesn’t Usually Drink Chocolate Milk • Kangaroos Hopping Down My Driveway Carrying M&M’s • Karate Hamsters Drink Milk During Christmas Morning eka nits eci illi enti ilo ecto eters

  5. To Change Units Splash down the # line first! • k h d d c m u For example: Change 500km to dm. 1) Find the unit you are starting in on the number line 2) Find the unit you want to convert to 3) for each word in the mnemonic that you need to move, move the decimal point the same number of places in the same direction. Try it! What is your answer?

  6. k h d d c m u We start at k for kilo, hop 4 places to the right to d for deci. So, for 500km we move Decimal 4 places to the right. The answer is 5,000,000dm

  7. Let’s put this in units you know, $$$ • k h d d c m u Match ‘em up! Which unit do we not have $ for? What is the value of: A kilodollar? A hectodollar? A dekadollar? A decidollar? A centidollar? A millidollar?

  8. Fun Fact! • In the metric system, 1ml of water has a mass of 1 gram and will fill a cubic volume of 1cm3 • This fact is only true for water. This fact allows us to use the water displacement method to find the volume of irregularly shaped objects.
