  1. Question of the Day • 1. Who proposed the theory of continental drift? • 2. What was the name of the supercontinent ? • 3. List 3 pieces of evidence used to support the theory of continental drift.

  2. Bill Nye…Pangaea • http://youtu.be/lJiAUvB1vEU

  3. Fossils and The Law of Superposition Liz LaRosa 5th Grade Science http://www.middleschoolscience.com 2009 This PPT was created with the information from the FOSREC Activity “Who’s on First?” and “Fossil Inferences” by UEN.

  4. Fossils and Superposition • What is a fossil? The trace or remains of an organism that lived long ago, most commonly preserved in sedimentary rock. Fossils give us clues to Earth’s past.

  5. What type of clues do fossils show us? • Surface Changes: Show us that the surface of the earth has changed over time. Examples: Sharks teeth (our state fossil) found in our backyards-tells us that at one time in Earth’s past, this area was part of the ocean floor. Sea Shell fossils found on Mountain tops

  6. Climate Changes • Shows us how the climate of an area has changed over time. • Example: A tropical plant Fossil found In the Arctic Tells us that This area was once much warmer

  7. Law of Superposition • What is the law of superposition? Younger rocks lie above older rocks if the layers have not been disturbed… Younger Over Older
