WARNING: ENSURE THAT AFFF IS CONTINUOUSLY APPLIED TO ALL WEAPONS EXPOSED TO FIRE. WATER HOSELINES SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR ORDNANCE COOLING UNTIL AFTER THE FIRE IS EXTINGUISHED. THE USE OF WATER FOR ORDNANCE COOLING MAY DELAY EXTINGUISHMENT BY DILUTING OR WASHING A WAY THE AFFF BLANKET. POST FIRE ORDNANCE COOLING (AFFF OR WATER) SHALL CONTINUE FOR A MINIMUM OF 15 MINUTES TO ALLOW THE WEAPONS CASES TO RETURN TO SAFE AMBIENT TEMPERATURES. POST AIRCRAFT FIRE OVERHAUL EVENTS SHALL NOT BEGIN UNTIL ALL WEAPONS HA VE BEEN IDENTIFIED AND DETERMINED SAFE OR REMOVED BY EXPLOSIVE ORDNANCE DISPOSAL (EOD) PERSONNEL.
(1) Bomb type ammunition is designed to be carried either in the bomb bay of aircraft or externally under the wings or fuselage. (2) The Navy is endeavoring to use only thermally protected bombs on carriers because of their increased cook off times.

M61A1 20-MM Aircraft Gun Installed in the F-14 and F/A-18 aircraft. Magazine may contain up to 1,000 rounds of 20MM high explosive ammunition.

SUU-44 and SUU-25 Flare dispensers: Carry eight MK 45 or LUU para-flares. When ejected from its dispenser or separated from the tray: consider flares fully armed- Once the tray separates from flare, a fuse will fire within 5 to 30 seconds.
This separating of the flare casing explosively can cause it to travel up to 150ft. A 50 pound pull will ignite the flare candle. Avoid pulling on shroud lines or allowing parachutes to inflate. If ignited, the candle should be extinguished by inserting a water applicator tip into the burning end of the candle, applying low velocity fog. The flare will normally extinguish in less than 30 seconds.

Cartridge Actuated Devices (CADs) CADs are small explosive-filled cartridges used to fire missiles or release mechanisms. Escape operations performed by CADs are canopy removal, seat ejection, and parachute deployment.
WARNING: WHEN EXPOSED TO THE HEAT OF A BURNING AIRCRAFT "CADS"CAN EXPLODE AND DROP MISSILES OR BOMB RACKS TO THE DECK LEVEL AND/OR INTO BURNING DEBRIS. ACCORDINGLY: THE SCENE LEADER, IN CONSORT WITH FLIGHT DECK CONTROL SHALL ACCOUNT FOR AND VISUALLY IDENTIFY ALL WEAPONS FOUND AT THE SCENE.

NATOPS 00-80R-14 PUBLISHES INSENSITIVE MUNITIONS CHARACTERISTICS OF AIR LAUNCHED IN-SERVICE WEAPONS WHICH PROVIDES A SINGLE-SOURCE REFERENCE FOR COOK OFF CHARACTERISTICS AND SUMMARIZES THE CURRENT AVAILABLE DATA FOR IN-SERVICE NAVAL AIR-LAUNCHED WEAPONS. SUMMARIZED ARE WEAPONS DESCRIPTIONS, EXPLOSIVE TYPE, COOK OFF TIME AND REACTION. THIS VOLUME SHALL BECOME APART OF THE READY REFERENCE LIBRARY OF CRASH AND RESCUE CREWS ASHORE AND AFLOAT.
