An Introduction to spss & endnote Rachel S. Shi PhD student (ISEM) @ HKBU Oct. 2012
AGENDA • Basic SPSS skills • Input data • Compute Mean & Standard Deviation • Plot pie chart & histogram • Run a regression model • Endnote skills • Install free-license version • Create new reference (manually & import from Internet) • Cite while you write • Brief introduction to Qualtrics
Basic spss skills • SPSS - Statistical Package for the Social Sciences • Definition: • SPSS is a computer program used for survey authoring and deployment, data mining, text analytics, statistical analysis, and collaboration and deployment. (Wikipedia)
Basic spss skills – input data • Go to Dr.Vincent’s website and download the data file: www.hkbu.edu.hk/~vwschow (Lecture notes – ISEM3120 – Data set 1 & Sample Questionnaire) • Input Data • Open SPSS (close the excel file first) • Open an existing data source – OK • Select your data file (in case of excel file, you need to change the “File of type” to Excel (*.xls,*.xlsx,*.xlsm)) • Another way to open data: File – Open – Data
Basic spss skills – Compute Mean & Standard Deviation • Mean – the sum of the values divided by the number of values. • Example: Compute the Mean of Factor 2 (Q14-Q18) 1. Transform – Compute Variable 2. Give a name for target variable: MN_F2 3. Function group: All 4. Functions and special variables: Mean (double click) 5. We get the formula of Mean in Numeric Expression: MEAN(?,?) 6. Select Q14-Q18 to replace the “?” in the formula, Qs should be separated with a “,” 7. Click OK 8. Then we can see the mean of Factor2 (MN_F2) in the last column of the data file.
Basic spss skills – Compute Mean & Standard Deviation • Standard Deviation – shows how much variation exists from the average (mean value). • Example: Compute the Standard Deviation of Factor 2 (Q14-Q18) 1. Transform – Compute Variable 2. Give a name for target variable: SD_F2 3. Function group: All 4. Functions and special variables: Sd (double click) 5. We get the formula of Mean in Numeric Expression: SD(?,?) 6. Select Q14-Q18 to replace the “?” in the formula, Qs should be separated with a “,” 7. Click OK 8. Then we can see the Standard Deviation of Factor2 (SD_F2) in the last column of the data file.
Basic spss skills – Compute Mean & Standard Deviation • Another way to compute Mean & Std. Deviation • Analyze – Descriptive Statistics – Frequencies • Select the variables you would like to compute, in this case, Q14 – Q18 • Click Statistics • Check “Mean” and “Std. deviation”, and click Continue • Click OK • Then you can see the result in the output window
Basic spss skills –Plot Pie CHART & HISTOGRAM • Pie chart • Graphs – Legacy Dialogues – Pie • Select “Summaries of groups of cases”, click Define • Drag the variable you want to plot pie chart into “Define slices by” • Click OK • Then you can see the pie chart in the output window
Basic spss skills –Plot Pie CHART & HISTOGRAM • Histogram • Graphs – Legacy Dialogues – Histogram • Select the variable • Check “display normal curve” • Click OK • Then you can see the histogram in the output window
Basic spss skills – Run a regression model • Y = aX1 + bX2 • Y: Dependent variable • X1, X2: Independent variable • a, b: coefficient
Basic spss skills – Run a regression model • Example: • Run a regression modeling with Factor2 (F2), Factor4 (F4) and Overall User Satisfaction (OUS) • Compute the Mean value of F2, F4, and OUS : MN_F2, MN_F4, MN_OUS • Analyze– Regression – Linear • Put MN_OUS into Dependent • Put MN_F2 and MN_F4 into Independent • Read the result: R2, β, Sig.
Endnote skills • Endnote is a reference management software package, used to manage bibliographies and references when writing essays and articles. (Wikipedia) • Main purpose for BBA project: • Manage reference • Cite reference
Endnote skills - install • Download Endnote at: http://pan.baidu.com/share/link?shareid=80620&uk=2684802673 • Install steps: • 1. Double Click file "ENX4Inst.exe" • 2. Click Next for all except it ask for product code. Select install Trial Version • 3. Let it do the install and click finish when it complete • 4. Go to Cracked folder and copy file "EndNote.exe" • 5. Open the folder in which you installed your Endnote. (Default folder should be: C:\Program Files\EndNote X4 ) • 8. Right click and select "paste" • 9. You could use Endnote now
Endnote skills - install • Get started with Endnote • Create a new library (Can save it on your local disk or on your finger ) • A library is where you put a set of references. (e.g., You can create a library only for one paper) • To open your library, find the folder where you save your library, then double click “My Endnote Library.enl” • Create new group in your library: Right click “My Groups” – “Create Group”
Endnote skills – Create new reference • Manually create reference • Reference – New Reference • Input the information of a article (i.e., author, year, title, journal … ) • Attach a file to a reference • Edit reference • Double click a reference, or • Select a reference – right click – Edit Reference • Delete reference • Drag the reference to Trash, or • Select a reference – right click – Move Reference To Trash
Endnote skills – Create new reference • Import reference from Internet (e.g., Google Scholar) • Open Google Scholar – Settings – Search Results – Bibliography manager – Show links to import citations into “Endnote” • Example: Search articles about “e-commerce” • Find the paper you want • Click “Import into Endnote” (Right down corner) • Double click the downloaded file (.enw) • Then you can see the new reference in Endnote
Endnote skills – Cite reference in a paper • Connect Word with Endnote • 1. Open the folder where you install Endnote • 2. Endnote X4 - Product-Support – CWYW • 3. Find the following two files, and copy EndNote Cwyw.dll & EndNote Cwyw.dot • 4. Close Endnote and Open Word • 5. Office Button – Word Options – Trust Center – Trust Center Settings – Trusted Locations • 6. Double click “Word 2007 default location: StartUp” • 7. Copy the address “C:\Documents and Settings\...\Word\Startup\”
Endnote skills – Cite reference in a paper • Connect Word with Endnote (2) • 8. Then close Word • 9. Past the address into one address box, then open the folder • 9. Past the two files you copied before into this folder • 10. Now open Word again, you will see Endnote X4 in the Menu
Endnote skills – Cite reference in a paper • Cite While You Write • Open your Endnote Library, and then open Word • Click “Endnote X4” in the Menu of Word • Insert Citation – Find Citation • Search the key word of the article you want to cite • Select the article, and click Insert
Endnote skills – Cite reference in a paper • Select the reference style • Select Endnote X4 in Word menu bar • Click the small arrow beside Bibliography • Then you can choose reference style in the “With output” drop down menu
AN BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO QUALTRICS • Qualtrics software enables users to do any kind of online data collection and analysis. (Wikipedia) • Official website: www.qualtrics.com • Get a free account at HKBU Qualtrics: http://chtl.hkbu.edu.hk/qualtrics/ • Login with your student ID and password
