2. WHAT IS EPP? Purchasing products that have a reduced negative effect on human health and/or the environment when compared to comparable products and services. EPP = Environment + Price + Performance

3. Why should we care about EPP? • Improves ability to meet Yale’s environmental goals and requirements • Potential cost savings • Improves worker health and safety • Reduces operating and maintenance costs, including hazardous material handling and disposal costs • Helps create and sustain markets for environmentally responsible and recycled content products • Helps preserve natural resources

GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF EPP • Include environmental considerations as part of the normal purchasing process. • Emphasize pollution prevention early in the purchasing process. • Examine multiple environmental attributes throughout a product's or service's life cycle. • Compare relevant environmental impacts when selecting products and services. • Collect accurate and meaningful information about environmental performance, and use it to make purchasing decisions. 6. II. Emphasize pollution prevention early in the purchasing process. • Procure products which: • Eliminate or minimize use of toxics through substitution with less harmful substances • Increase energy and water efficiency – seek out products that reduce demand on these resources.

Compare relevant environmental impacts when selecting products and services. • When comparing products and services based on their environmental impacts, consider the following: • The reversibility of the environmental impacts • The geographic scale of the environmental impacts • The relative increase in environmental performance • The importance of protecting human health

9. V. Collect accurate and meaningful information about environmental performance, and use it to make purchasing decisions. • Use Comparison charts and rating systems • EPEAT • Look for third-party certifications • Greenguard • Energy Star • Forest Stewardship Council

What is Yale University Procurement doing about EPP? • Participated in NAEP’s Sustainability Institute and joined the Responsible Purchasing Network • Buyers include a Sustainability Statement in RRIs and RFPs and request presentations from Yale suppliers to learn more • EPP has been incorporated into policies and procedures • Surveyed Top Yale suppliers on their activities • Surveyed other universities on their planning and progress • Updated Green Purchasing web site • Created a guide to EPP at Yale • Initiating an outreach program in partnership with Office of Sustainability to further Yale’s goals

Here’s how you can make a difference! • Check SciQuest for products meeting environmental certification standards at great negotiated prices! • Purchase a minimum of 30% recycled content multi-purpose paper, #CEB8511RCY • Purchase high-quality remanufactured toner cartridges then recycle them. • Purchase general office supplies with recycled content. • Think about other steps to green your office – REDUCE, REUSE, & RECYCLE. This decreases the need to spend more on new products! • Spread the word to your colleagues!
