  3. Math Homework All students will take home a 120’s chart. Please practice the following skills:• Find all the odd and even numbers• Skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s• Choose a number and find 1 less and 1 more (+1 -1)• Choose a number and find 10 less or 10 more (+10 -10)• Start at any number and count backwards (subtraction)• Start and any number and count forwards (addition) Literacy Homework ∙ Read, read, read! Encourage your kids to read daily for at least 20minutes. Take them to the library, allow them to earn new books,or anything that will get them excited about reading! ∙ We will begin sending “Just Right” readers within the next few weeks. ∙ Encourage your child to read to you and review our 1st grade sightwords list posted on our websites!

  4. 1st Grade Reading Expectations First grade is pivotal in your child’s academic success. This is when he/she needs to learn how to read. By the end of the year, your child must be able to read 50-70 words per minute. In order to do so, each child must read a minimum of 20 minutes per day. If he/she struggles to read, it is okay for you, or a sibling, to read to him/her. As the year progresses, he/she should begin reading independently. Reading Level Expectations: Sep.   5. Comfortable tennis shoes and water bottles with a pop-top lid are required so that children are able to run and play during P.E. LeBlanc- Bring tennis shoes everyday since this class will split up. Adams- Monday & Wednesday Arias- Wednesday & Friday Blickenstaff- Tuesday & Thursday Hamilton- Monday & Thursday Shivers- Tuesday & Friday

  6. Arrival begins at 7:30 am. Students will report to the cafeteria until 7:45 am when they’ll be released to their classrooms. Formal instruction will begin at 7:55 am. Recess will be at 10:40 am. Followed by lunch at 11:10 am. Dismissal begins at 3:20 pm. On “Early Release” days students will begin dismissal at 12:00 pm. If your child needs to be picked up early, please call the school at 281-641-3000 before 1:00 pm. For your child’s safety, we cannot change a child’s mode of transportation without written notification or direct phone call from a legal guardian. ***Parent visitors must check in at the front office. Please notify your child’s teacher in advance.

  7. All students will be aware of the campus expectations of being RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL, and SAFE.Students attend school in order to grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially. A few general rules that must apply for all:✧ Hallways are silent zones – Students are appropriatelyprepared for transitions prior to entering the hallway.✧ Fighting, teasing, etc. is not tolerated at any time. ✧ Appropriate language is used and respect is given toeveryone at all times.

  8. 1st Grade General Schedule 2019-2020: 7:30-7:45 – students arrive & wait in cafeteria 7:45-8:00 – unpack/morning jobs/morning work/buckets/SWE TV ANNOUNCEMENTS 8:05- 10:40- Reading Workshop with integration of Social Studies 10:40-11:10- Recess 11:10-11:40- Lunch 11:40-12:40- Writing/ Science 12:45-1:30- Specials 1:30-3:20- Math*Fridays- 2:30-3:20- Genius Hour

  9. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS To celebrate your child’s birthday you may purchase frozen dessert treats for their classroom. Please complete the form on our school website and send it to the cafeteria at least two weeks in advance with your payment. You may also call the cafeteria manager, at 281-641-3008 or e-mail the manager. The payment for the frozen dessert will be deducted from your child’s lunch account. You may also send in cupcakes during lunch time. Please no cake or balloons.

  10. Parent Volunteers are always welcome! The 1st grade teachers can always use help, both at school and from home. ☺ Please email your teacher if you are interested in participating. Areas of need include brown bag, copy helpers, cutting and pasting activities, and much more!

  11. P.E. Parent Letter We are looking forward to working with your child in physical education. Our goal is to provide a positive learning experience while developing the mind and body through physical activity. Safety is a primary concern, so we ask that your child wear or bring tennis shoes or wear enclosed flat rubber soled shoes on physical education days. No Crocs, sandals, wheelies, or flip flops are allowed. Our classes are outside (weather permitting), so children should be dressed appropriately for the weather. Please be sure your child wears shorts under a dress/skirt. Children are also encouraged and permitted to bring water bottles (with names on them). If your child is to be excused from participation due to illness or injury, they will need a parent note. If they are to be excused for more than three days, a doctor’s note is required according to district policy. Please advise your child to give all notes to their homeroom teacher or the school nurse. Also, if a child has a note and is excused from P.E. they are not allowed to participate in recess. Physical Education Expectations: Participate- Give 100% Support Others & Be A Good Sport Remember To Listen & Follow Directions Respect Others & Equipment Always Think Safety! Students that choose not to follow expectations will have consequences ranging from being pulled from the activity for a period of time, signing the penalty book, a note home, a phone call or email to parents, or a visit to the AP/Principal’s office. Our grading procedures will be run by a point system. A student receives a point when they sign the penalty book.
