P3. C ircular Motion. Talk to the person next to you to answer these questions…. Why does the Earth spin on its axis? Why does the Earth orbit the sun? Why don’t we fly off the spinning Earth? If I let go of a ball on a string, will it fly directly outwards or off at a tangent?. Objectives.

P3 Circular Motion
Talk to the person next to you to answer these questions…. • Why does the Earth spin on its axis? • Why does the Earth orbit the sun? • Why don’t we fly off the spinning Earth? • If I let go of a ball on a string, will it fly directly outwards or off at a tangent?
Objectives • To describe how you can accelerate when travelling at a constant speed • To know what a centripetal force is • To know what effects centripetal force
Velocity is speed in a given direction Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity
F = ma If an object moves on a circular path it must be accelerating, so there must be a force acting on it. We call this the centripetal force. It always acts towards the centre of the circle.
Write definitions of: • Tangent • Centripetal • Acceleration • Velocity • Radius
Draw a diagram with the centripetal force labelled and what causes it for: • A ball on a string • A car turning a corner • A satellite orbiting the Earth • A plane banking
The Challenge As a group you are to make one object that demonstrates centripetal force and the physics principles involved (mass, radius, velocity, forces etc)
F = m v2 r
