Scientific Notation AP Chemistry Summer Homework Math Review
We can express big numbers and small numbers in a simpler form by using scientific notation. 2000 = 2.0 x 103 0.0002 = 2.0 x 10-4 Scientific Notation
Everything is expressed in the tens places. • The number of places you move to the left to get to the tens place will be your exponent on 10. 50,000,000 = 5.0 x 107 Large Number Scientific Notation
The number of places you move to the right to get to the tens place will be your exponent on 10, but the number will be negative. 0.000006 = 6.0 x 10-6 Small Number Scientific Notation
You can only have one number in front of the decimal. Never more…never less! 100 x 102 RULE! 1.00 x 104
Convert the following to scientific notation: 1. 5,256,000,000 2. 0.00000045 Class Example
Convert the following to scientific notation: • 5,673,500 • 0.0004256 Try It Out!
You MUST have the same exponent if you are going to add and subtract numbers in scientific notation. 5.02 x 105 + 1.04 x 104 5.02 x 105 + .104 x 105 5.124 x 105 A Note on Adding/Subtracting in Scientific Notation
