Union vs. Confederacy EQ: What advantages did each side have in the war?
22 million people lived here Had more factories for making weapons & supplies Had more railroad lines so soldiers & supplies could quickly be moved 9 million people lived here (1/3 of them were enslaved & couldn’t become soldiers) Most of the fighting took place here Soldiers were defending land they knew Excellent military leaders North against South
Plans for War • Union leaders decided to block southern seaports … why? - The Confederacy would not be able to trade with other countries! ● The Navy would also take control of the Mississippi River; then the Union army would attack in the East & West at the same time
South’s strategy • The South decided to fight off northern attacks until the Confederacy could survive as a separate nation • Southerners knew that many Northerners were already against the war, so if the Union lost too many battles the Northerners might give up • They also hoped for help from Britain & France because they needed southern cotton
The War in the East • At the start, both sides expected a quick victory • Thousands of men from both sides joined the armies • At the First Battle of Bull Run, General Thomas Jonathan Jackson led Confederate troops from the top of the hill. An onlooker said he looked “like a stone wall.” He became known as Stonewall Jackson.
What were they thinking? • The Confederate army won the 1st Battle of Bull Run, but it was worse than expected. • People soon realized that the war would not end soon …
