The 3 Secrets to develop your child into a proficient writer!
What does the State of California spring exam expect from their grades 3-5 students? 1 Students will have writing “stamina” and be able to write a well organized essay with correct structure. 2 Can construct effective arguments and write detailed essays with supporting evidence. 3 They comprehend as well as critique; while becoming engaged and open‐minded—but discerning—readers
How can I build my student into a “super strong’ writer? Superstar writers can… • -write on demand • -write efficient • -write effective
Specifically- What do they need to be able to do? • Analyze a writing prompt and know exactly what type of writing it calls for.
Past 4th grade Exam- Example • Explain how _____ can help people in their everyday lives. Support your answer using details from the passage.- ( Student has to know – Informative) • Write a summary of key events that led to _____ becoming a famous _____. Use details from the passage in your summary to support your answer.(Student has to know-informative) • Explain the author’s most likely purpose for writing about _____. Use examples from the passage to support your response. (Student has to know- Opinion)
Students have to practice writing !!! • It is essential for students to practice writing at home and in school. • They have to develop an “expert list” of topics they know about and care about • When they do that- then they have many practice topics to write about!
What does an “expert list” look like? • From a 5th grade student- My Expert List: • Art • Animals • Science • Swimming • Music • Favorite foods • Arizona
Not 7 topics, but 70 topics!!!! • Example- Topic- Animals 1- An animal poem 2- An animal report 3- A list about my favorite animals 4- An informative write on how to draw animals 5-An opinion piece on Why the zebra is my favorite? 6- A fictional narrative- What if dogs could fly? 7- How to choose the best pet
Secret # 2- Details, details/find the evidence • Good writers have to be able to make their writing “come alive”! • The State will grade your student’s writing on evidence & elaboration
Secret #2- Continued • Students who know how to incorporate sensory details, display a command of the language in their writing. • 5 senses- Smell- flowery, fragrant • Touch- silky, slimy, sandy • Hear- blast, silence, noisy • Taste- salty, delicious, savory • See- big, small, angled
Secret # 3- How can I write using evidence from the text? • All of the writing prompts on the state exam ask students to cite evidence from the text. They have to be able to FIND it and PULL it. • Learning how to effectively use quotations as writing “jumping points”.
Finding evidence- Use quotes • From an article in Time For Kids magazine- The 2016 Summer Olympics • For example- If a student quotes the writer • In the article the authors states that “The U.S. dominated the 16 day summer international competition.” • This quote lets the reader know that the U.S. did not just compete in the Olympics, rather they were the winners in many events.
