Workshop goals • Assemble microdata and documentation for each census and country • Report on the census microdata available to the IPUMS project and briefly discuss major harmonization issues for each country, census-by-census, question-by-question, concept-by-concept, code-by-code. Overview of project: Goals • IPUMS is a global partnership to (1) preserve census microdata and documentation,(2) integrate census microdata samples, and(3) disseminate anonymized sample extracts to researchers and policy makers, at no cost—regardless of country of birth, residence or citizenship

IPUMS: Internationally integrated, anonymized sample extracts: https://www.ipums.org/international • Note: original source files are never accessible to researchers • Extracts of census microdata samples are accessible free-of-charge to qualified users on a restricted access basis • Data are governed by a uniform Memorandum of Understanding endorsed by the National Statistical Office before work begins (70 countries have joined) • Project pays $1/5,000 per census for data, docs, and license • 2-3 years of work (done by MPC) to integrate data • Full source documentation; metadata for statistical packages • >2,000 users: over 50 countries, more than 300 institutions • Sustained funding: National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health of the USA

  9. - Warning - • IPUMS microdata are anonymized samples. • They are for advanced analysis and research. • Use of a statistical software is required. • Statistical software provides great power. • “With great power, comes great responsibility.” • IPUMS samples are for analysis; they are not official statistics.

Summary of Project Milestones • Endorsed Memorandum of Understanding: 72 National Statistical Offices (NSOs) • Entrusted Census Microdata and Documentation: 65 NSOs, 184 censuses • Now accessible: samples for 26 countries, 80 censuses, 200 million person records (at no cost from: ipums.org/international)
