Accuracy • Accuracy is how close a measured value is to the actual (true) value.
Precision • Precision is how close the measured values are to each other.
DO NOW • Write the Scientific Method in four simple to understand steps?
Counting • 1) ALL non-zero numbers (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) are ALWAYS significant. • 2) ALL zeroes between non-zero numbers are ALWAYS significant. • 3) ALL zeroes which are SIMULTANEOUSLY to the right of the decimal point AND at the end of the number are ALWAYS significant. • 4) ALL zeroes which are to the left of a written decimal point and are in a number >= 10 are ALWAYS significant.
Addition and Subtraction • When adding or subtracting numbers, count the NUMBER OF DECIMAL PLACES to determine the number of significant figures. The answer cannot CONTAIN MORE PLACES AFTER THE DECIMAL POINT THAN THE SMALLEST NUMBER OF DECIMAL PLACES in the numbers being added or subtracted
Multiplication and Division • When multiplying or dividing numbers, count the NUMBER OF SIGNIFICANT FIGURES. The answer cannot CONTAIN MORE SIGNIFICANT FIGURES THAN THE NUMBER BEING MULTIPLIED OR DIVIDED with the LEAST NUMBER OF SIGNIFICANT FIGURES.
Rounding • If the number to the right is less than five, round down, if the number to the right is more than five round up.
Example • 50.783 (round to 4 sig figs) • =50.78 • 4.389 (round to 2 sig figs) • =4.4
The 5 Rule • When the number to the right is a five. If the number that will be rounded is odd round up. If the number that will be rounded is even round down.
Examples • 5.785 (round to 3 sig figs) • The number to the right is five we will round the eight. Since it is even we will round down. • =5.78 • 5.775(round to 3 sig figs) • The number to the right is five we will round the seven. Since it is odd we will round up. • =5.78
