Theme Love is all that matters; everything superficial fades away, leaving relationships and the strength of our ties to one another the only things that truly last forever.
Conflict • Can Cameron overcome his illness long enough to find out who he really is, and what really matters?
Quote • “You’ve been assigned an identity since birth. Then you spend the rest of your life walking around in it to see if it really fits. You try on all these different selves and abandon just as many. But really it’s about dismantling all that false armor, getting down to what’s real.” • --Going Bovine, pg. 153
Tone– this is a dark comedy, and the quote demonstrates how aptly the author captures a speculative teenage voice. Theme– Discovering who he really is becomes Cameron’s first step in truly being able to care about others Mood– The mood progresses from dark, bitter and sarcastic to blissful when we’ve reached the end. This is mirrored in Cameron’s statement; as he strips off the layers of armor, he becomes his true self and finds happiness.
