Neutrino factory:accelerator R&D bid against Sr2002accelerator fund Information from Joint [PPARC/CCLRC] Board on Accelerator R&D (JCBoARD) Personal (I hope informed) opinions about: Composition of accelerator bid How to organise NF accelerator bid … obviously for discussion! K. Long, UKNF, 24Jun03
JCBoARD #1: 07Apr03 • Mainly administrative, but: • Grahame Blair presented draft of Linear Collider Steering Committee’s final report • Defines programme of R&D costing (from memory) £13.5M over 2003/04 – 2006/07 to put UK in position to take on beam delivery system for LC • Discusses detector R&D • Discusses strength of collaboration and organisation • KL presented neutrino factory machine R&D • MICE separate; since funded through Capital Fund • Key technologies: targetry, ion source & chopper
JCBoARD #1: 07Apr03 From UKNF submission to Science Comm.
JCBoARD #2: 02Jun03 • Main business: bids against accelerator fund • Total to bid against: £11.5M over 2003/04 – 2006/07 • Science Committee: ‘lion’s share for Linear Collider’ • Bid for: • Projects: e.g. targetry, ion source/chopper … • University accelerator centre: model IPPP • Deadline: 31Aug03 • PPARC strategy: Linear collider top priority Neutrino factory, should be supported • CCLRC strategy: under discussion
Comment on SR2004 • PPARC strategy (again informed personal opinion): • Large bid for Linear Collider: building to ~ £40M/yr • Other accelerator work from core programme • CCLRC strategy? • Personal view: • Scientific, technical and opportunity case for UKNF programme first rate • Essential to organise so that we have strongest possible programme, documentation, organisation in place • Argue our case!
Personal view: • Joined-up programme: • Off-axis beam • Neutrino factory R&D • Need to consider some work on FFAG’s in collaboration with Japanese groups
Composition of UK-NF bid: • Project bid: • Exec. Summ. • Intro • History; MuScat, HARP, etc. • MICE; first priority, but separate funding line • Ownership of key technologies and develop leadership of design • Physics: • SNO/MINOS, OAB • Need for detector R&D • Key enabling technologies (KET): • Ionisation cooling (elsewhere) • Targetry • Ion beam and chopper • Structure of bid: • Embed KET R&D projects within end-to-end design study
Composition of UK-NF bid (cont.): • Project bid (cont.): • Neutrino factory accelerator complex overview • From source to neutrinos, options (e.g. FFAGs) along way • Targetry • Ion source and chopper • Development of team for end-to-end design study • Requirements for SR2004 • Summary • ‘Management annexes’ • (Not quite) … as detailed as MICE-UK document – but close! • University involvement, care with MICE commitments • Opportunities for training students
Organisation/management: • Formal organisation required! • Peer review, as robust as MICE? • Demonstrate our ability, enthusiasm, determination • Put UKNF science, technology, opportunity case as strongly as possible as require, from 01Sep03! UKNF steering group group ASTeC, Industry, ISIS, University Ion source/chopperManager/team Targetry Manager/team …. Design study Manager/team
