  1. Juice:Innocent… Little Tasty Drinks By Brady Christenson

  2. The title is actually Fresh Fruit Smoothies Slogan.

  3. History Origins came from South East Asia. The word orange came from the French word ‘or’ meaning gold. It is a cross between a grapefruit and a mandarin

  4. Florida • It was a natural place for oranges to settle • Right climate • Right growing season • The right time

  5. Pre-War • Before 1942 juice was not popular. • .01 pounds per capita drank • 18.9 pounds per capita of oranges were consumed

  6. War Time • Concentrated orange juice was made to send overseas to provide a healthy drink to soldiers overseas • It was also made to become a vitamin supplement • Went over so well that it became popular in the home-front

  7. Modern Production • Has actually increased • Production has gone up • Is increasingly unhealthy

  8. Unhealthy • Juice unhealthy? • Yes • Large amounts of pesticide use. • 300 times the amount of allowed pesticide residue was found in a random sample of juice in the UK. • Many of these are carcinogens • GMO’s are becoming increasingly popular to fight the pest HLB • This is odd because it could be fought by simply keeping the soil nutritious • E-Coli outbreak

  9. E-coli • 1996 Seventy people were infected • 25 were hospitalized • 14 had hemolytic uremic syndrome • 1 died

  10. More bad news • For every 64-ounce bottle of OJ there is over 4lbs of CO2 emitted into the air • Mostly from fertilizer (35%) • OJ isn’t that healthy…. • Worse than soda • More calories • More sugar often times • Hard on children's digestive systems

  11. Poor working conditions • A worker makes about $4.66 an hr. • Very hard work • Dangerous due to pesticides • 12 hr. days

  12. Not 100% OJ • When companies say 100% OJ they are often lying • Orange peels • Chemicals • Dyes

  13. Go green • Tropicana • Organic fertilizer • 5 years • Trying to minimize Nitrous oxide. • For every 64-ounce of juice made there is 4 pounds of CO2 emmited into the air.

  14. Climate • Due to oranges growing in hot weather locally CSA’s are not possible • Neither is the aspect of buying local • This makes it very difficult to get truly “fresh” Juice

  15. Honest Tea • This is a good example of where we need to go • Green Bottle • 100% organic • Eco-friendly • Sustainable

  16. Sad truth • Juice is not sustainable right now • We need to have massive change to make it sustainable • We must demand to know: • What is in it • The water it is used • Study in Florida about EPA and poor water quality • We must know its organic
