This forum aimed to develop Russian-American dialogue and partnership in resolving child protection-related issues. It facilitated interdisciplinary discussions and presented best practices in preventing child abuse and violence against children.

ABOUT THE FORUM The Forum was initiated by Russian specialists working as part of the Child Protection Subgroup under the Bilateral Presidential Commission’s Civil Society Working Group (Obama-Medvedev) which began work in October 2010. Slide 3

SCOPE OF THE FORUM • Practical organization of early child abuse detection and the work of interdisciplinary groups on child abuse-related issues in the Republic of Buryatia • Prevention of child abuse • Emergency assistance and rehabilitation for children victims of abuse and their families • National and international child protection-related issues and the role of the civil society in tackling these issues • International cooperation: pressing issues and prospective Slide 17
OUTCOME • Effective and professional interdisciplinary and intersectorial discussion • of the most pressing issues concerning Russian and American experience • in child protection both among government officials and experts • The participants drafted the RESOLUTION of the Forum • with the recommendations on key issues. The Resolution was sent • to the executive and legislative bodies concerned both in Russia and the USA • The Forum was established as the annual bilateral event • The 2nd Russian-American Child Welfare Forum is due in autumn of 2012, • in Illinois, USA Slide 18
OUTCOME • The participants supported the initiative of the National Foundation for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children to establish the Russian Professional Association for Child Abuse Prevention • The participants presented a set of initiatives now being arranged and analyzed • The Forum proved to be an effective platform to present • the future Center for Best Practices in child protection • in the Republic of Buryatia Slide 19
