Moorpark College Ed Garcia – egarcia@vcccd.eduComputer Networking Systems Engineering Vocational and Transfer courses in Information Technology, Microsoft & Cisco Certification Tracks
Topics • Teacher Training program • Curriculum Strategies • My Retention Plan/Ideas
Teacher Training was needed • Technical Experts • Limited Community College teaching experience
Teaching Skills Workshop • Attend Teaching Skills Workshop (18 hours) • Practice Teaching strategies • Collegial participation and sharing • Implement a “Check for Understanding” • Share frustrations and possible solutions • Video taped lesson delivery w/constructive feedback
Classroom results to expect • Whiteboard with key discussion topics • Various “Check for Understanding” • More Breakout sessions – Less Broadcasting • More Critical thinking questions • Attempt to engage non-participants- ASAP
Graduates • See themselves as Educators • Have toolbox of teaching strategies • See the bigger picture -retention and varied delivery • Empowered to educate
Curriculum Strategies • How do you integrate BSI or Teaching Skills Workshop strategies into curriculum?
Triangle Problem – Whats the problema? Year 2001 I taught Intermediate & Advanced Course 25 students @ Tier3 50 students @ Tier2 200 students @ Tier1
Problem - Communication Breakdown W/Adjuncts • Internship Opportunities • Education Plan – Counseling Appts • Employment Announcements & Discussion+ Career Guidance Hand Outs • Course Substitution information • Academic Tracks - Certification, Transfer programs • Additional Lab Hours, New Course opportunity
New Triangle Solution Working Professionals teach here 50 students I now teach here where I can focus on transition efforts Prioritize your TSW grads here 100 students 200 students – largest BSI population enrolls in new Entry Courses – Critical Point
Results – Lower Attrition • More Students seem to be focused on a Goal! • Students have expressed willingness to successfully complete “Irrelevant” courses • Students reduce class loads to focus on success and improving GPA/Certification • Students to come to me with complaints • Students offer ideas/suggestions ie: New classes – program needs • Students start asking about University Transfer Programs – Goal has shifted!
Garcias Retention Plan • TSW campus facilitator • Evolved as a Teacher? • Over Achievers + BSI • Age + Goals
Encouraging HEAT works best! Help students light their torch!
HEAT • Easy for me to remember as I prep for class
HEAT => Provide Structure • Homework – Status & Performance Data • Engage – Exercises with Check for Understanding handout • AAA - Agenda + Assessments + Accessibility (DE) • Time-Mgmt – Calendar in Class
My Classes have High Retention • 30% will succeed regardless of your efforts • 30% will fail regardless of your efforts • Developing strategies for that 40% can impact retention data. • Using D.E. portal for supplemental is a big benefit for ALL students • I feel effective!
Ideas? • Build a Teaching Skills Workshop program – Yes Stipends Help • Identify your Triangle and its Faculty • Integrate BSI/Retention/Transition –Teacher Evaluation process • DE portal with supplemental materials • Develop campus BSI Website with resources
