Explain Louis XIV’s policies and characterize his reign. 4. Describe the disastrous wars fought by France.
Religious and Power Struggles • Henry of Navarre – ascends to French throne in 1589 and adopts Catholicism • Issues Edict of Nantes – a declaration of religious toleration
Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu • Cardinal Richelieu – Louis XIII’s minister who rules France • Increases power of the Bourbons by limiting Huguenot’s freedom • Weakens power of the nobility
Writers become skeptics • Skepticism – the idea that nothing can be known for certain • Montaigne – explores ideas about life’s meanings in essays

War of Spanish Succession • 1701 – War to stop the union of the French and Spanish thrones • 1714 – war ends and France and Spain both lose territory
Legacy of Louis XIV • Louis dies and leaves a mixed legacy • His time of power leave France a major military and cultural power in Europe
France in economic hard times • His wars and elegant living leaves France in heavy debt • Would inspire many to question French monarchy.
