EXPERIMENTAL METHODS IN THERMAL ENGINEERING P M V Subbarao Professor Mechanical Engineering Department Man is the measure of All things . . Measurement is the cornerstone of our life . .
“When you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; • but when you cannot measure it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind . . . ”. • -- Lord Kelvin No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right; a single experiment can prove me wrong. --Albert Einstein
Why do We Need Measurement? If we are living in a cave, we need not measure to a precise standard. We might be having fire, stick and stone tools in our cave. There, starts a measurement system. Like when you grunt and say how many beast you killed for dinner, 1, 2 or 3.....measurements. When gathering wood for a fire you would ask for so much wood.....measurement. To live in our physical world we need to understand it (The Knowledge).
What is Present? • Measurement is KEY to the knowledge and interaction. • A Science & Technology of a measured understanding. • Science is about doing and making, not just thinking. • It is crucially an experimental activity, directed to measurement. • In Engineering & Technology; • Responsible people seek the most measured way to understand their situation. • Any inquiry will get ignited as Engineering only when its practitioners become serious about the practice of measurement. • Measurement functions not simply to furnish a test of some theory, but rather as a direct argument to a specific theoretical conclusion . • The more the measured understanding is in practice, the more harmonizing its engagement of the evidence will be.
