Marienthal-Studies • From 1820 to 1930 "Marienthal" was the name of a complex of a textile factory and a labour colony in the South of Vienna. At its peek time it employed up to 1,300 workers. • The area included apart from the factory also social infrastructure, e.g. a hospital and a kindergarten, theatres and facilities for sports. • During the Economical Crisis in the 1930ies the factory was closed down in a minimum of time, leaving about 1,200 workers and their families unemployed. Marienthal-Studies • In this time Marie Jahoda (1907-2001) and her team wrote a study, investigating the habits of the Marienthal inhabitants. • The study pointed out the socio-psychological effects of unemployment and clarified that longtime unemployment doesn't lead to riots (as many expected), but to passive resignation. Marienthal-StudiesAims • Students are to compare the "idleness" as an attested result of unemployment with the current situation. • Via photographs and image editing the pupils are to project their thoughts into the then situation, to internalize and recognize possible parallels. • The pupils are to recognize the aesthetic features of the photography of that time (sepia-tone, slight overexposure, deckle edge) and to imitate them with the help of modern image editing programs. • Duration: 5 sessions (4 hours each) Analysis – Nov. 2013 criticART
