Problem • Does chilling an onion make it so that you don’t cry?
Hypothesis • I think that it will, because the vapors in the onion are cooled down.
Materials • 2 onions (one chilled, one unchilled) • Stopwatch • Paper/Pencil • My Family
Procedure • Gather all materials • Buy two onions from the store • Put one in the fridge, and leave one out • Test the Unchilled onion • Test the Chilled onion • Record results
Variables • Variable: Same onions Same refrigerator • Dependant Variable: Whether or not they cry • Independent Variable: Chilled or Unchilled
Results • Unchilled: • Dad- Chopped for 35 seconds and eyes were burning • Mom- Chopped for 35 seconds and eyes were burning, at 52 seconds she was crying • Kash- Chopped for 3 minutes and had no burning or crying • Myself- Instantly burned, cried at 45 seconds
Results (continued) • Chilled: • Dad- Chopped for 42 seconds and eyes were burning, at 1 minute 17 seconds started crying • Mom- Chopped for 53 seconds and eyes were burning, at 1 minute 17 seconds started crying • Kash- Chopped for 2 minutes and had no irritation • Myself- Chopped for 30 seconds and at 45 seconds started crying
Conclusion • In conclusion my hypothesis was correct! Chilling the onion did help, by a bit. I think that it is because of the vapors and how they get cooled down. Then they don’t irratate the eyes as much.
Thanks! • Thanks to Mrs. Riffel for letting us have class time to work on our project. Also thanks to my mom for buying my materials.
