  2. Drama • Acts: Units of the action in a drama. • Scenes: Acts are often divided into parts called scenes. • Dialogue: The words characters say. The words each character speaks appear next to the character’s name. • Stage Direction: These are sets of bracketed information that convey information to the cast, crew, and readers of the drama.

  3. Characterization • The art of bringing made-up people to life through their words and actions. • Act 1, Scene 1: Cornell Notes • Describe Mr. Frank. • Who is Miep? What is she like? • What does Mr. Frank receive from Miep, and what effect does it have on the play?

  4. Setting • The setting is Germany, WWII (1938-1945) • Hitler ruled Germany 1933-1945 • Allied powers (U.S., U.K., France, Soviet Union) vs. • Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, Japan) • What is the actual setting for the first scene in the play? • What is the setting at the beginning of Scene 2?

Holocaust The HOLOCAUST was Germany's deliberate attempt, under Hitler's rule, to exterminate all Jews in Europe: • Killed over 6 million Jews • Weapons: Starvation, Torture, Dehumanization, Concentration Camps SS = Hitler's personal elite body guards, did most of killings ordered by Hitler • Gestapo = Branch of the SS • Star of David: symbol of Jewish Faith • Nazi = Anti-Jew *Swastika = Nazi symbol
