scope • what is a PMF? • www napkins? • our old PMF approach • why change? • beyond napkins • Our PMF • lessons learned
PMF? a tool kit with processes and templates to support the successful delivery of a project. (and hey, what’s a project??!) The PMF lifecycle: 1.initiation 2. Planning 3. implementation 4. closing!
www Napkins? • a movement BACK to the napkin... • visual thinking solves problems • “the hand-drawn doodle... has the power to humanize the abstract and simplify the complex” * ** http://www.businessweek.com/managing/content/feb2008/ca20080220_798280.htm ** http://www.thebackofthenapkin.com/
ourold PMF: ??
why’d we change? • Staff asked for it • Organizational change • Never feel like things are DONE • Doing more with ‘less’ • whatare we doing? • managing expectations • Internal and external
beyond napkins • Initiation: • hire a consultant • follow PMI standards (project management institute) • develop what works for us (less paper work!) • - focus on process
beyond napkins • planning: • have consultant ‘train a trainer’ • roll out to staff in training sessions • Including management! • - mandate the use of the PMF • - start date for all to use - no PB no approval!
beyond napkins • Implementation: • project briefs for all projects • teams work together for resources • approval process – Management Team • Use templates required (S, M, L) • senior staff as PMs • everyone has access
CCS Projects Folder CCS Project Briefs Folder
lessons learned • staff push back: • too much paper work • too much time • takes time to learn it • start with project briefs • all must use it • to succeed!
lessons learned • now we know what we are doing • use of resources (people, budget) • collectively achieve department’s goals and strategies. • Improved communication (internat & external) • *Projects end!!*
our new PMF Use, modify, make it your own.
