Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de los Muertos) • Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. • The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. • Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts • The Aztecs and other Meso-American civilizations kept skulls as trophies and displayed them during the ritual. The skulls were used to symbolize death and rebirth.
Assignment • Draw a skull • Come up with a design for inside and around the outside of the skull • Use one type of balance for your design: • Symmetrical • Asymmetrical • Radial • Add Color, use shading
Symmetrical Balance • Equally balance on both sides/top & bottom like a mirror image.
Assymetrical Balanced • Balanced but not the same. Size variation to create balance.
Radial Balance • Balanced in a circular pattern around a central point.
You will be graded on: • Skull drawn with good proportions • Designed with good balance: • radial, symmetrical or asymmetrical • Excellent design inside skull and around skull • Good use of color • Good color gradations (light to dark)
