  2. This award honors professor Sheldon Friedlander for his leadership as a researcher, teacher, and pioneer in aerosol science. The Sheldon K. Friedlander Award “recognizes an outstanding dissertation by an individual who has earned a doctoral degree. The dissertation can be in any discipline in the physical, biomedical, or engineering sciences but has to be in a field of aerosol science and technology”.

Friedlander Award • Peter DeCarlo, Ph.D. • Paul Scherrer Institut, Switzerland • Nominated by Prof. Jose-Luis Jimenez, Ph.D. thesis advisor at the University of Colorado at Boulder • Ph.D. Atmospheric Science, University of Colorado, 2007 • Author of 17 journal papers, and 10 articles under review • Ph.D. thesis paper, “Particle Morphology and Density Characterization by Combined Mobility and Aerodynamic Diameter Measurements,” was cited 160 times as of 2009 • 6 of his papers have been cited more than 50 times • “Thesis included hardware and software development, theory development for physical properties, and field campaigns including sophisticated statistical data analysis.” • “…he combined his mathematical and abstract thinking skills, with curiosity about all aspects of a problem and motivation to carry through to a solution..” • DeCarlo is a master of instrumentation, analysis, and theory. This rare combination of skills is exciting and will establish him as a leader in environmental aerosol science.”
