Understanding Motion A TAKS Tutorial
What is Motion? • Only two things that we already know help us to define motion - length and time. • Remember that length is a measurement of space in any direction. • When we talk of how fast the object’s position is changing, then time enters the picture.
Speed and Velocity are similar, but different. • Both speed and velocity are rates at which position changes. • The word “rate” implies that time is involved. • For speed, the position change is measured by the distance covered (the total length of the path traveled). • For velocity, the position change is measured by how far and in what direction the final position is from the initial position).
Acceleration is how fast (and in what direction) velocity is changing • When an object is changing its velocity, we say that the object has acceleration • just as when an object is changing its position, we say that it has velocity. • Velocity is how fast (and in what direction) position is changing.
Acceleration Can Decrease Velocity • When acceleration and velocity are in the same direction, speed increases. • When acceleration and velocity are in opposite directions, speed decreases
