How well do we eat? NUTRITION & SENIORS… FACT SHEET • Basal metabolic rate decreases because of decreased muscle mass so you do not require as many calories. • Seniors require more calcium to maintain bone strength & prevent additional osteoporosis from developing

EASY WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR FIBRE • It’s always a good idea to start your day with a whole grain breakfast cereal & whole wheat toast with a fresh fruit. • Eat plenty of fruits & vegetables (check the Canadian food guide). Apples, grapefruit, brussel sprouts, broccoli & beans (especially navy & pinto). • Stick with fruits & vegetables that are in season to cut costs.
