  1. Blueprint Reading for the Machine Trades, Sixth Edition Unit 15: Spur Gear Terminology Russ Schultz and Larry Smith PowerPoint presentation created by LaVonne Vichlach

  2. Spur Gear Terminology • Addendum-radial distance on tooth from pitch circle to outside circle • Center distance-center-to-center distance between axes of two meshing gears • Chordal addendum-radial distance from the top of the tooth to the chord of the pitch circle

  3. Spur Gear Terminology • Chordal thickness-length of chord along the pitch circle between the two sides of the tooth • Circular pitch-length of pitch circle arc between corresponding points of adjacent teeth • Circular thickness-thickness of tooth measured along chord of pitch circle

  4. Spur Gear Terminology • Clearance-distance allowed between top of tooth and bottom of mating tooth space-to avoid interference when meshing • Dedendum-redial distance on tooth from pitch circle to root circle • Diametral pitch-ratio of number of teeth to the number of inches of pitch diameter-mating gears must have same diametral pitch

  5. Spur Gear Terminology • Number of teeth-total quantity of teeth formed along the pitch circle • Outside diameter-maximum diameter • Pitch diameter-diameter of pitch circle

  6. Spur Gear Terminology • Pressure angle-standard angle at which pressure from the tooth of one gear is passed to tooth of another-involute gears use 14 1/2° or 20° • Root diameter-diameter of the root circle
