  1. ACTIVIST TOOLKIT CONSUMERS ENERGY CAMPAIGN

  2. Why Consumers Energy? • Consumers Energy (CMS) is a large utility that has been hesitant to invest in renewable energy

  3. The Current Situation • CMS relies on coal-fired power to meet its electricity needs: • Karn-Weadock • JH Campbell • BC Cobb • Whiting

  4. A Glimpse into the future? • The utility is looking to replace its aging coal facilities with a massive natural gas facility in Thetford Township

  5. What’s the big Deal? • Natural gas is clean, right? • Actually, natural gas still produces significant emissions • The extraction process releases methane, a greenhouse gas

  6. The Scary Truth • Millions of gallons of water, mixed with carcinogenic chemicals, are pumped into the earth to reach NG deposits

  7. Deep within the earth • Radioactive materials from within the earth are also stirred into the mixture • There have been many incidents of contaminated drinking water

  8. How could we make matters Worse? • Consumers Energy, instead of shutting down some of its coal-fired plants, is simply waiting until coal is cheap enough to burn again

  9. The Legacy of coal? • Coal is bad for your lungs and triggers 68,000 asthma attacks in Michigan each year • Coal-fired power spews carcinogens and CO2 into the air

  10. Consumers Energy can do Better • There has been a tremendous decrease in renewable energy costs • CMS should replace coal with more renewables
