  1. STRONG (IRREGULAR) VERBS These are verbs which do not form the Past Participle in the usual way.

  2. STRONG (IRREGULAR) VERBS • DO NOT obey the rules. You have to learn their PAST PARTICIPLES by heart. • Generally they begin with “GE” and end in “EN”

  3. They do not obey the rule: 1. Take the INFINITIVE OF THE VERB (i.e. the form in the dictionary) e.g. spielen = to play, basteln = to do DIY 2. Put a “GE” on the front: spielen – GEspielen basteln – GEbasteln 3. Remove the final “en” or “n” and add a “T” GEspielen – GEspielT GEbasteln – GEbastelT

  4. HOW DO I KNOW IF A VERB IS STRONG (IRREGULAR)? • 1. Look the verb up in the dictionary: • 2. Using the MALVERN GUIDE dictionary: - Look up the verb “to write”

  5. You will find: • Write – schreiben v irreg. This means that schreiben is a verb and that it is irregular (or Strong).

  6. To find the Past Participle of a Strong (Irregular) verb: • 1. Go to the BACK of the Malvern Guide dictionary (Page 210) to the Verb Tables. • 2. Here you will find all the Strong (irregular) verbs listed. • 3. Find “schreiben” (Page 213)

  7. To find the Past Participle of a Strong (Irregular) verb: • 4. The 1st column is the INFINITIVE form. • 5. The 2nd column gives the he/she/it form in the Present Tense. • 6. The 3rd column gives the he/she/it form in the Imperfect Tense. • 7. The 4th column gives the he/she/it form in the Perfect Tense. This is what you want. • 8. The 5th column gives the English.

  8. 4th Column in the Verb Tables • This gives the PAST PARTICIPLE of Strong or Irregular Verbs. • If the Past Participle has an * beside it do not worry. All that this means is that you say: Ich binge somethining instead of: Ich habege something WE SHALL BE DOING MORE WORK ON THIS LATER ON!
