  3. “Tolerance” • To tolerate something implies a negative judgment about it. • Relativism: there is no right or wrong. • Skepticism: there is no way to know what is right or wrong • Negative defense of tolerance: tolerate something because there is no reason not to.

  4. “Tolerance” • Positive defense of tolerance: People should have the freedom to create their own lives. • There is more than one right way to live. • People need community.

  5. “Tolerance” • To tolerate is not to “put up with” or accept. • To tolerate is to care about something, disagree with it, and permit it to occur. • Criticism: acknowledge importance and unacceptability. • Respectful: active critical engagement. • Patronizing: silence, putting up with, political correctness.
