“Tolerance” • Positive defense of tolerance: People should have the freedom to create their own lives. • There is more than one right way to live. • People need community.
“Tolerance” • To tolerate is not to “put up with” or accept. • To tolerate is to care about something, disagree with it, and permit it to occur. • Criticism: acknowledge importance and unacceptability. • Respectful: active critical engagement. • Patronizing: silence, putting up with, political correctness.
