  3. KBAD understand the expectations of fifth grade Reader's Workshop. • Day 1

  4. Expectations • Students are reading independently • No one is moving about the classroom without permission • Reading groups are not to be interrupted

  5. Turn and Talk • What are the expectations for fifth graders during reading workshop?

  6. KBAD use a reading log. • Day 2

  7. Building Stamina and Being Consistent • We use a reading log to keep track of what we've read • It shows that we are reading in school and at home • It shows that we are pushing ourselves as readers

  10. Keeping Things in the Right Place • Our library is organized in a particular way • Some books are for anyone to take and read • Other books need to be signed out • Some books are just for reading groups

  13. Talking Like a Reader • Accountable talk is our way of discussing what we read • We use our accountable talk prompts to discuss our thoughts and feelings about what we've read

  16. Recommend Using Your ZPD Range • It's important that you know your ZPD range • When you recommend a book you want to make sure that it is the right level • Make sure to share why you loved the book without giving away too many details from the story

  34. Infer Using a Character's Actions • When we read sometimes the author leaves out details so that we can use our imagination • We use the clues the author has given us to fill in the missing pieces of the story

  37. Find Examples of Themes • When we find examples of themes we can take a moment to write down what we notice • We stop and jot on post-it notes so that we don't forget about what we noticed

  40. Connect Your Book to Your Life • Sometimes a story reminds of us something in our own lives • It is important to pause as we read and make connections to our own lives

  43. Find the Meaning of New Words • We use many different strategies for finding new words • It is important to try more than one strategy to make sure you found the correct meaning of the new word

  46. Identify a Character's Point of View • When someone is telling their story it is important to think about their point of view • What is the motivation for their actions? • Why might they think one thing and not another?

  49. Use Quotes to Prove Your Point • It's important to use evidence to support your point • When you are reading find quotes from the book that prove your point • Using the authors words will show that you understood what you read
