Objectives for Today • Students will understand what themes are and will write them. • Students will visualize story details. • Students will use the Visualize Strategy to identify theme.
Theme • A theme is the big idea or lesson the author wants the reader to know and learn.
Theme • As you read, you will use a Graphic Organizer: Inference Map to record details like the ones below to make inferences about the story’s themes. • Elisa’s Qualities • Elisa’s Motives • Elisa’s Actions • Important Lessons Elisa Learns
Analyzing the Main Character • Qualities are personality traits that make a character think and act in certain ways. • A character’s motives are the reason for his or her behavior. • A character’s actions show how he or she responds to conflict and to other characters in the story. • Ask yourself, “ What important life lesson does the main character learn?” This lesson is the story’s theme.
Visualize • Visualizing is using the text details to form pictures in your mind.
Visualize • Use the Inference Map to identify sensory details in the story that will help you from mental pictures of the characters’ behaviors.
